Ever wondered what our home towns of Midsomer Norton and Radstock looked like during the Victoria Era?

We’ve colourised this ordinance map of Midsomer Norton and Radstock, surveyed in 1883 and 1884, which shows exactly how our local area looked in the last couple of decades of Queen Victoria’s reign – decades before the First World War. A time when the local collieries loomed large – including Springfield and Old Mills collieries (now an industrial park and Tescos) Weltonhill Colliery and Norton Hill colliery. A time when Westfield consisted of only a few houses – away from the nearby town centres – including Westfield House, which at the time housed an isolation hospital for people with smallpox. A time when the Five Arches viaduct, still mostly present today, carried the Somerset & Dorset Joint Railway line over the GWR line and the Welton Hollow valley.

The map also shows the remnants of the original Foss(e) Way road built during the Roman era that bypassed Radstock town centre and connected Westfield directly to Clandown, a road already largely retired even back in the 19th century.

Many buildings shown on the map still exist today, including many of the terraced miners’ cottages, the Stones Cross coaching inn, the Crossway Tavern, Westfield House and the Midsomer Norton Town Hall.

You can easily trace both the River Somer and Wellow Brook throughout the map as they finally converge near Radstock, where the Blisters factory stands today.
The map is a stunning look at how Midsomer Norton and the surrounding areas looked nearly a century and a half ago.

All of our posters are printed and shipped from the UK. In extremely rare instances (due to unexpected stock shortages) we may ship from the E.U. Our posters are shipped rolled in triangular kraft boxes to prevent against damage and to avoid the use of single use plastic caps. Our smaller 8×10"/8x12" prints may arrive in enforced stay-flat envelopes.

Once you’ve made your purchase, you will receive an email (typically within 24 hours) with an estimated delivery date. Once an item leaves us, we will email you a tracking number so you can track your order to your doorstep.
